String of Pearls/Solid Support - Finale - Whole Body Integration

Spiral back to the series start, with more options, more awareness

String of Pearls / Solid Support

Series Finale - Spinal Technics

Based on a variation of AY 60 by Moshe Feldenkrais

A string of pearls - the theme of this session

Series wrap-up time. For that, we return to the go-to lesson for the liminal times between series: the full body survey (also known as AY60). This is the one where we gradually engage every major joint from front and back, top and bottom, side to side.

Integrate ‘the tongue as rudder,’ ‘pearl by pearl’ spinal awareness, synchronizing the low back and neck. Find lift - and support - in the upper back. Align the optimal breath pattern with what you want to do. Coordinate the spine and eyes and sense twinges of tension with the Voice-o-meter. (Download the “Healing Sounds” chart here.)

This lesson goes from supine to prone and back to supine. If lying on your tummy isn’t for you, no problem. It’s easy to adapt to staying on your back or side-lying.

Science Nerd Candy Bowl: a few videos that put the spine in perspective

Set Up for supine and prone:

  • Lying on a mat with support as needed for head and knees for supine; extra padding for the prone section, if tummy-lying isn’t great for you

  • Alternatively - Seated on a flat-bottom, armless chair with knees and hips level

How you might feel after this lesson: Tuned into the flexibility and stability of the spine; Aware of the neck and low back synergies for protecting the back and improving posture; Ribs flexible; Breath deep; Spine able to turn, twist, and double twist with ease; L O N G; Connected from toe to tip, including everything in between; Legs comfortable in hip sockets; Shoulders open and relaxed; Neck long and fluid; Strong supported twists for sports, driving, and performance.

Takes about two minutes for the real video to start. From there, every kind of spinal movement covered in this epic dance video. If you have the patience, stay for the end: Michael dancing solo, breaking a lot of glass. He got spine.
