Pelvic Floor Revisited: Spiraling In - 1 - Up and Down, Side to Side
Pelvic Floor Revisited: Spiraling In - 1 - Up and Down, Side to Side
Spiraling into the pelvic floor system - vertical and horizontal
Based on “Pelvic Health and Awareness – Lesson 1 – Breathing and relaxing into the pelvic floor” as taught by Deborah Bowes, PT, GCFT®
Yesterday, a huge, I mean giant, turkey was throwing himself at his reflection in my downstairs window. Who was this other Tom who dared to enter his domain? I had to chase him away with my car and install a mylar curtain over the window to keep him from picking another fight with his maddening reflection. He made a mess of the screen.
In other words, it’s spring, and time to think about birds, bees… and pelvic floor systems.
We will revisit, in condensed format, Deborah Bowes’ original “Pelvic Health and Awareness” program.
To recap, the pelvic floor supports five functions: The pelvic floor has five major functions: Movement of the body: legs, hips, trunk, Continence, Sexual function, Prevent prolapse of abdominal organs, Support circulation in the legs.
In this first session, we connect the diaphragm and pelvic floor through belly breathing and vertical pelvic rocking. Then we go horizontal by tipping the legs side to side to feel the pelvis roll and experience how the inner legs soften as the pelvic floor contracts and rises.
Science Nerd Candy Bowl:
How Breathing and The Core Influence the Pelvic Floor, Kinetic Labs: (first 45 seconds most useful) A balloon demonstrates how the diaphragm and pelvic floor interact during breathing
The female pelvic organs: the muscles of the pelvic floor, the inner walls of the pelvic cavity (a 7 minute exploration of all the bones, muscles and organs that layer up to create the pelvic floor system)
The adductors and the gracilis medial compartment of the thigh (demonstration of how the adductors work. Unfortunately, the pelvis is immobilized and doesn’t show coordination of breath, pelvis and legs. Best I could find.)
Set Up for Supine Lesson:
Lying on a mat with support for head and legs as needed
OR Leaning back in a comfortable chair so head and neck are supported
Blankets and socks as needed
How you might feel after this lesson: Tuned into your root chakra/pelvic floor, Connected from front pelvis to back; New sense of the coordination of breath and pelvic floor contraction and release; Sense of the pelvic floor as a muscle group; Clued in on connection of abductor muscles, breath, and pelvic floor; Sense of when the pelvic floor is relaxing.
