Reset Your Body Beat - 3 - Baby Head Lifts with Rocking
Reliving that breakthrough moment when your baby self discovered how to lift her head - its a rocking good time
Based on “Restorative Rhythms: Feldenkrais Lessons for Health and Pain Relief - 3 – Rocking head to toe” as taught by David Zemach-Berson, GCFT®
oscillations - same back and forth motion
All due respect to David Zemach-Berson for bringing us back to our original rocking selves - our baby selves who rocked our way into lifting our heads.
This prone lesson is a step-by-step recreation of your 2-month old self’s process of lifting your head. It begins on the tummy with toes tucked under. Like the last lesson, the toes initiate the oscillating rocking, with the forces running from the feet to head and back.
The lesson opens up the upper back as hands and long legs facilitate rocking and bring more attention to the shoulder blades. The rocking drives new developmental achievements. Turning the head to one side while rocking adds a twist and the reminder of those first days when you reached your head, shoulders and hips toward sounds.
Over the course of the session, we go from just-born to about two months development, rocking the head and chest up, and looking side-to-side. Bringing it into the fully-grown world, the lesson ends in standing: bouncing on toes, turning and walking. Another grown-up benefit: looser ankles for better balance.
It’s important in this lesson to pay attention to your low back. If it starts to crunch, bring attention to your shoulder blades and neck. Let your belly go soft. Do less., Baby backs are softer, so we have to bring some adult sensitivity to the practice.
This baby-moves lesson in a series on rhythm was a happy surprise. Enjoy a healthy regression and return.
