Reset Your Body Beat - 5 - Relearn Rolling
That thing - just over there - how can I reach it to drool on it?
Based on “Restorative Rhythms: Feldenkrais Lessons for Health and Pain Relief - 4 - Restorative Rolling” as taught by David Zemach-Berson, GCFT®
More developmental steps. This time we relearn rolling.
Interesting that a Google search on rolling back to side yields no results. Rolling is, in general, another parent anxiety free-for-all. When should my baby start rolling? How can I help her learn? An awful lot about helping.
The Feldenkrais Method is very much based on allowing our baby selves to develop at our own pace, experientially through experiment, failure and trying again. That is the real learning that is the foundation that supports all future growth. Our baby selves don’t need our parents to short-cut and short change our learning.
In keeping with the series theme to date, our adult selves will observe our baby selves discover how the legs direct the pelvis to roll. We begin to find arm strength and use it to roll the upper body. We break the art of rolling down into its smallest component steps, and come to appreciate all it takes for a limp little baby to achieve this feat.
Part of the lesson has us lift our legs to the ceiling for maximum leverage. Modifications include just bending the knee or even leaving the foot on the floor.
The grand finale is a spontaneous roll from side to side. Give yourself enough room to really stretch out. It feels great on the back and shoulders, and is joyfully freeing. Really, when was the last time you just rolled for the fun of it? Even got yourself dizzy…
It’s back to babyhood and beyond! Enjoy.

How you might feel after this lesson: A bit trancey; Breathing coordinated with walking; Hips open and comfortably aligned; Legs aligned in hip sockets, with ground forces flowing easily from foot to hip to head; Shoulders surprisingly released; Upper back and chest looser and more flexible; Deep into baby mind; Curious about what’s next!
