Long Neck, Light Head - Integration Week - No Dead Birds

Test your heavy and light headed connections

Based on AY 60 By Moshe Feldenkrais

When an actual dead bird - the Merlin app identified it as a song sparrow - chose my deck as its final resting place, I got the hint. Enough with the dead bird lessons.

Our favorite science hunk, Dr. Andrew Huberman, suggests testing oneself, failing, and trying again as a useful protocol for activating neuroplasticity, learning and retention.

The challenge this week is to apply the “heavy” and “light” head lessons body wide. We will review my favorite integration/self assessment lesson, AY60. This is the survey of all the major joints from the back, front and back. It will be familiar to some students, possibly demanding for newer students. Either way it is super for recognizing and claiming improvements, and for sparking the nervous system to pay attention to new information.

The lesson starts supine with your fingers gently lifting the head by a few strands of hair. Elbows and knees get moving, then shoulders and hips. If you are up to it, roll over to the tummy to really work the spine. Or stay on your back and convert the prone to supine movements. Then back to the front to integrate hips, shoulders, spine and head. Chair sitting is a perfectly good alternative, though nobody ever seems to want to a sitting lesson.

After weeks and weeks of heavy and light head lessons, aren’t you curious to see how you use your head?

Science Nerd Candy Bowl: none this week .

Set Up for lying supine and prone:

  • A mat on the floor with support as needed for head, knees in supine position, and any softness you might want for the prone section.

  • OR seated on a flat bottom, armless chair with knees and hips level, feet resting on the floor.

How you might feel after this lesson: Curious; Proud of your growth; Piqued to apply the heavy and light head lessons to your daily movements.
