Reset Your Body Beat - 9 - Wavy Baby Side Flows, Part 2
Balancing the horizontal and vertical
Based on “Restorative Rhythms: Feldenkrais Lessons for Health and Pain Relief - 7 - Primary Undulations” as taught by David Zemach-Berson, GCFT®
This variation of the shimmy lesson (see below for other examples) captivated my attention in a new way. In this variation, in side-lying, the arm initiates the downward flow and separates the shoulder blades’ actions from the ribs.
The gradual focus from palm to elbow to shoulder to upper, middle and lower ribs in sequence down, and then up, clarified the energetic flow, highlighted blind spots.. Also, the sequencing brought new awareness to the way the hip rolls vertically down the outside of the leg in the downward flow, and up, vertically, on the upward flow. The extended arm, pressing down, activates the shoulder blade in an interesting way.
So, we will try this one again with fresh attention on the shoulder blade and hip rolls. And highlight how the up and down energy flows relate to walking. Plus, it feels great afterwards.
Taking the lesson from the side to the back gave me a new perspective on the relationship between the front and back ribs as the wave flowed up and down.

Set up for a side lying and supine rolling lesson
Lying on a mat with enough room on both sides to roll
Support for knees and back of the head for supine segments, if desired
OR seated in a chair that allows movement on both sides, knees and hips level
How you might feel after this lesson: Breathing coordinated with walking; Hips open and comfortably aligned; Legs aligned in hip sockets, with ground forces flowing easily from foot to hip to head; Shoulders surprisingly released; Upper back and chest looser and more flexible; Possible trance state via horizon gazing; Deep into baby mind; Delighted by the joy of wavey side rolling; Curious about what’s next!
