Reset Your Body Beat - 10 - Wavy Baby, Part 3 - Timing Matters
Sequence movement up and down for an effortless wave
Based on “Restorative Rhythms: Feldenkrais Lessons for Health and Pain Relief - 7 - Primary Undulations” as taught by David Zemach-Berson, GCFT®
Sometimes, in a lucky moment of fresh mindset or curiosity or the alignment of the stars, a slight twist on a familiar lesson ignites a flash of insight: OH, THAT’S WHAT I’VE BEEN MISSING. A new window is open, and if fortunately, the insight is strong enough, the window becomes a door that stays open.
For me, it was the conscious sequencing of the wave movement through the ribs that lit me up. Confession: in sending ground forces up and down through the shoulder, I was skipping/short circuiting the middle ribs. Without the middle ribs engaging in sequence, those ribs were collapsing and my movement felt tight and incomplete. It bugged me that I couldn’t figure out how to make movement through the torso easy and graceful.
Taking the time to reset my timing had infinite value. In the side-lying part of this lesson, experimenting with gliding the shoulder blade over the ribs, then the ribs under the shoulder blade invited my shoulder to rest down against the back ribs, chest up. Guiding the ribs from top to bottom, sequentially, toward the floor made me realize how I’ve been “skipping over” the middle ribs and basically twisting myself in wrong direction. Also, my hips were rolling vertically in the opposite direction from what works. Geez.
My underused middle ribs are tender from being asked to dance, and still shy about being included. It’s progress and I am optimistic.
So that’s the first 3/4 of the lesson. The final section is supine, isolating right and left ribs without losing the whole body sequencing. Put it together in a flowing horizontal wave/shimmy. Then add the vertical element, the spine, head and pelvis, for the full body experience. We might get through the rest of the lesson with week…

Set up for a side lying and supine rolling lesson
Lying on a mat with enough room on both sides to roll
Support for knees and back of the head for supine segments, if desired
OR seated in a chair that allows movement on both sides, knees and hips level
How you might feel after this lesson: Breathing coordinated with walking; Hips open and comfortably aligned; Legs aligned in hip sockets, with ground forces flowing easily from foot to hip to head; Shoulders surprisingly released; Upper back and chest looser and more flexible; Possible trance state via horizon gazing; Deep into baby mind; Delighted by the joy of wavey side rolling; Curious about what’s next!
