The Light Returns - 7- Hands and the Eyes in the Back of Your Head
Eye hand coordination at it’s deepest
Based on “Telescope Eyes and Relaxed Eyes,” from “Seeing Clearly” by David Webber
Experience the body-wide melt that comes with letting the eyes sink deeply into the optical cortex. To take this relaxation into daily life, this week repeats the “eyes in the back of the head” lesson, adding “prayer-hand” movements that track/guide the eyes.
This lesson uses imagination and the conscious, simple movements of the eye muscles to achieve zen-like passivity. Imagine each eye acts a telescope with the lens resting in the optical cortex, and the tube of the telescope rotating around the back of the eye as it scans in different orientations.
The eye muscles release, the eyes rest heavily in gravity, the focus softens, and when we open eyes again, what is out there comes to us. No straining. No expectations. No desire. Full body release. Pure reception and acceptance.
Over this deep relaxation we add simple eye-hand coordination movements. Closed eyes now focus on and follow hand movements that guide the original lesson’s eye movements. Right hand and right eye, left hand and left eye, then both eyes and joined 'prayer hands’ as one.

“Slowly as I move, directing my attention to where I can move with quality, i.e. a sense of ease and comfort, I find that I can approach the difficult places [discovered in circling the eyes] ... and begin to make a complete smooth and enjoyable movement. Now I experience a spreading ease throughout first the right side of my face, then with my breathing. Eventually I am directed to return to the movement of the hands, and find my right hand more supple and moveable. This is learning, however, not at the level of simple association, or conditioning.”
How you might feel after this lesson: Relaxed, realigned, refocused, receptive.
