The Light Returns - 8 - Breath, Hands, Rhythm and Eyes

Box breathing with a groove leads to relaxed, balanced gaze

Based on “Easy Breathing,” from “Seeing Clearly” by David Webber

The conscious mind is almost entirely housed in the muscles of the eyes.
— Milton Erickson, psychiatrist and hypnotherapist

To close out this series, another deeply relaxing session; ‘box breathing’ on back and front results in balanced soft eyes that easily rest on the horizon and seep relaxation into the whole self.

Box breathing sets a beat to which we inhale, hold, exhale, hold.

From the Cleveland Clinic Web site: Box breathing is a form of yogic deep breathing employed by the United States Navy SEALs and by stressed-out people everywhere. Benefits include: reduced stress by lowering cortisol levels, moving into a parasympathetic state, and sitting in the present moment.

Box breathing is familiar but always worth getting into again. Focusing on a count tapped out, that magic moment of transition from inhale to exhale comes into focus, which isn’t exactly the point of the lesson, but infinitely interesting.

This is one of those Feldenkrais lessons where the actions seem to have no direct relationship to the outcome. But, no surprise, the final moment of opening the eyes and allowing the world to come to you is one of deep relaxation, eyes softly resting on the horizon, shoulders dropped and the centerline clear.
