Reset Your Body Beat - Reset Your Body Beat - 12 - Undulations for Skiers
From floor undulations to weight shifting on virtual skis
Based on “Restorative Rhythms: Feldenkrais Lessons for Health and Pain Relief - 9 - Evolving Undulations” as taught by David Zemach-Berson, GCFT®
I didn’t plan this, but this series’ final lesson takes from the floor to sitting and standing. And, just in time for an epic blizzard, from standing to the essential ski turn.
Looking back, we have traced our personal movement evolutions from newborns jiggling to feel ourselves, to using that jiggling to propel our heads up. Then rolling and finally the undulating motions that precede crawling and walking.
This lesson brings it all to the center. It begins supine with undulations up and down the spine in coordination with the breath. Then there are diagonals to connect the corners and stabilize the up/down forces. A roll to the side shifts the relationship to gravity and offers the spine more freedom to undulate. Then another gravitational variation: the same movements in side-lying. Then upright in a chair, undulations from the floor up and shoulders down. Finally in standing, diagonal undulations that lead to the “down and hup” of my childhood ski lessons.
I am practicing this sequencing in everything I do. Yoga, driving. I know, I find every series profound and transformational. I am just another student, just a bit further down the line. Thank you for hanging in there with me! I cannot wait to get on skis, if I can just clear a day for the slopes….
